It consists of 22 hectares of old vineyards and olive groves, with an average age of over 80 years, planted in schist soils, with a maximum altitude of 250m. To ensure the best use of the land and the best sun exposure, the steep slopes of Quinta da Foz, with slopes that exceed 25% in some areas, were shaped, to plant the vines, in three different ways: terraces, traditional terraces and vineyards high up on the slope. Over centuries of cultivation with traditional techniques, the Douro people discovered unique ways of planting their vineyards, by making the rock on the surface of the soil arable. In turn, the schist guarantees and controls the temperature, thus creating the Douro’s unique microclimate for the development of the vine and roots. The total production of the vineyards is classified A, which means that the wines produced at Quinta da Foz are of high quality. More than 30 varieties are planted at Quinta da Foz, with the predominant varieties being Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz. In winemaking, tradition is associated with innovation, using sophisticated techniques combined with foot treading in granite presses at a controlled temperature. All these conditions, together, make the great Quinta da Foz wines.
